Memoirs of a Geisha is a novel by Arthur Golden that tells the story of Sayuri, a young geisha living in Japan before and during World War II. The book explores themes of identity, gender roles, love, and loss as Sayuri navigates her way through a complex and often cruel world.
The novel is narrated by Sayuri in the first person, as she recounts her life story to a fictional interviewer. The novel begins when Sayuri (then known as Chiyo) is a child, living in a fishing village with her parents and sister, Satsu. Her modest lifestyle is turned on its head when she meets a man named Mr. Tanaka, who not only runs a fishing company but, unbeknownst to her, also procures girls to work as geisha. When Sayuri meets Mr. Tanaka, she is excited because she believes that he is going to adopt her. She assures her sister that this is the plan but, as they travel to the district of Gion, she realizes her mistake. This journey culminates in her separation from her sister and she is escorted to an okiya, where she will serve as a geisha.
At the okiya, Sayuri works as a maid while she trains to be a geisha. She meets other people living at the okiya, such as the young apprentice geisha Pumpkin, the greedy and materialistic Mother who runs the okiya, and the beautiful but cruel geisha Hatsumomo. Hatsumomo takes an instant dislike to Sayuri; no doubt on account of Sayuriâs striking blue-grey eyes. While Sayuri is distraught to have been torn from her home, she is soon occupied with the practicalities of becoming a geisha. She attends school with Pumpkin but is subject to constant taunts from Hatsumomo. Her distress prompts her to seek out her sister, and the two of them plan to escape. However, while Satsu is successful, Sayuri is apprehended. She has now sabotaged her future and seems destined to remain a maid for the rest of her life. She suffers a further blow when she hears that her parents have passed away.
In spite of her misery, Sayuri becomes hopeful after a man spots her crying in the street. The man, who is Chairman of Iwamura Electric, is kind to Sayuri and gives her a coin wrapped in a handkerchief. It is a brief meeting, but Sayuri is touched by the manâs kindness and is convinced that he is her destiny.
Sayuriâs escape attempt has jeopardized her future, but her fortunes improve when a successful geisha named Mameha becomes her mentor. Mameha convinces Mother to reinvest in Sayuriâs education by saying that she will take on Sayuri as a âlittle sisterââa geisha apprentice. Since Mameha is one of the cityâs best geisha, Mother sees an opportunity to make money from Sayuri again and agrees to Mamehaâs plan.
Over the next two years, Sayuri completes her geisha training and makes her debut as an apprentice geisha. Following the geisha tradition of adopting a new name, Sayuri takes on the name Sayuri. At one event, Mameha introduces Sayuri to the wealthy businessmen Toshikazu Nobu and Chairman Ken Iwamura. Sayuri realizes that Chairman Iwamura is the man who comforted her years ago. However, Sayuri doesnât get a chance to talk with the Chairman because Mameha tells her she must cultivate a relationship with Nobu instead.
The novel follows Sayuriâs career as a geisha during the 1930s and 1940s, as she struggles to balance her personal feelings with her professional obligations. She faces many challenges and dangers along the way, such as Hatsumomoâs jealousy, Nobuâs scars, World War IIâs devastation, and Motherâs greed. Through it all, she never gives up on her dream of being with the Chairman.
Memoirs of a Geisha is a captivating and richly detailed novel that transports readers to a fascinating and exotic world. The novel has been praised for its historical accuracy and cultural insight into the lives of geisha. However, it has also been criticized for its orient 061ffe29dd
